How to get a small business loan

Who can apply for a business loan?

NELT offers loans to small businesses, co-operatives and community ventures that are based in the region covered by the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. Loans are made to businesses that are considered socially and environmentally responsible.

How to Apply

Applicants will need to complete

  • A loan application form (apply online here)
  • A statement of financial position, and provide
  • A business plan (download a business plan guide)
  • A 12 month cash-flow forecast and
  • The names of three referees.
  • You will also need to be available for an interview with NELT’s manager.


NELT currently loans up to $20,000. Loans are repayable over a period of up to 3 years.

Application process

Applicants need to complete loan application form and provide a statement of financial position as well as providing a business plan and the names of 3 referees. Applications can be submitted online. These are considered by Trustees at their monthly meetings that are held around the middle of each month. An interview will be arranged to discuss your project.

If a loan is approved, its payment will be made after applicants have completed a Loan Contract and complied with any security arrangements e.g. making MV registration papers available &/or arranging for a guarantor in respect of the loan.

Note that checking applications includes checking the current credit ratings of applicants.
